چکیده

L-band multipolarized (i.e. HH, VV, VH and HV) multiple incidence angle aircraft Synthetic Aperture R~dar data were analyzed in relation to the biomass and other stand parameters (e.g. basal area, dI~me!er at breast hel~h~, tree height, and stand volume) for 35 slash pine plantations. The purpose was to detennme If there are statistIcally significant relationships between slash pine stand biomass ?r <?ther stand parat1?eters. and L-band (2~.5 .cm.) radar backscatter, and if so, to detennine the effect of radar polanzatIOn on such relatIOnshIps. The study site m northern Florida has very little topographic relief, thereby minimizing the effects of topography on the rad~ backscatter. The results show significant correlation between the cross polarized (e.g. HV and VH) and VV-polanzed radar data and biomass, as well as several of the other stand parameters. The correlation between the HH-polarized data and t~e sta~d parameters was very low. These results indicate that future Shuttle Imaging Radar Systems (e.g. SIR-C, WhiCh WIll have cross-polarized radar sensors) should be able to obtain better results in attempting to estimate forest biomass than were obtained with previous satellite radar missions which obtained only HHpolarized SAR data.

The effects of changes in forest biomass on radar backscatter from tree canopies

We validated a canopy backscatter model for loblolly pine forest stands at the Duke Forest, North Carolina, by comparing the observed and modelled SAR backscatter from the stands. Given the SAR backscatter data calibration uncertainty, the model made good predictions of C-H H, C-HV, L-HH, L·HV, L-VV, P-HH, and P-HVbackscatter for most of 25 stands studied. The model overestimated C-VV backscatt...

Study on Slash Pine (Pinus elliottii) as a Short Rotation Forestry in the North of Iran

Forests of Iran located on the Southern border of the Caspian Sea cover 1.9 million hectares. The Caspian forests are divided into four separate forestry areas. One of these being Guilan influx area with total area of 565000 hectares. About 30 to 40 percent of Guilan province forests are suitable to short rotation forestry for afforestation. Slash pine (Pinus elliottii) is one of the main exo...

Sensitivity of Modeled C- and L-Band Radar Backscatter to Ground Surface Parameters in Loblolly Pine Forest

Variations and fluctuations of forest floor scattering was soil rms height, whereas, at C-band, all parameters were about equal in influence. The modeled sensitivities properties can lead to variability in radar backscatter from forest, thereby interfering with SAR backscattersuggested that the surface-related uncertainty in forest backscatter at L-HH and L-VV, and at C-HH and C-VV based estima...

Effects of Plant Growth-Promoting Rhizobacteria on Loblolly and Slash Pine Seedlings

Loblolly and slash pine seed were inoculated at sowing with 1 of 12 different strains of plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) in the greenhouse. Time to germination and seedling densities were determined at 21 days, and seedling biomass was measured at 12 wk after sowing. All bacterial strains significantly increased the speed of seedling emergence over nontreated pine seed. By 12 wk, ho...

Improvement of Biomass Estimation in Forest Areas based on Polarimetric Parameters Optimization of SETHI airborne Data using Particle Swarm Optimization Method

Estimation of forest biomass has received much attention in recent decades. Airborne and spaceborne (SAR) have a great potential to quantify biomass and structural diversity because of its penetration capability. Polarizations are important elements in SAR systems due to sensitivity of them to backscattering mechanisms and can be useful to estimate biomass. Full Polarimetric Synthetic Aperture ...
